Mr. Buren Odell Collins

Mr. Buren Odell Collins of Slocomb passed away Sunday, February 05, 2012 at Wesley Manor Nursing Home.  He was 93.

 Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 6, in Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Etheridge officiating.  Burial will follow in Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 1:00 until service time.

Mr. Collins was born on April 15, 1918 in Geneva County, AL to the late Hosea and Sophia Collins. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Katie Collins; three sisters:  Ruth Tew, Bonnie Grace Burton, Frances Martin; two brothers:  Hosea Paul Collins and James Collins.

Survivors include his two sisters:  Mildred Adkison of Slocomb, Yuvan Holland of Hartford; two brothers:  Raymond Collins (Ruby) of Slocomb, Hilton Collins (Elvie) of Tallahassee, FL; several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Jerry M. Bullington

Mr. Jerry M. Bullington of Hartford passed away Tuesday, February 1, 2012 at the family residence.  He was 66.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, February 3, in Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Paul Ferrell and Rev. Jimmy Cook officiating.  Burial will follow in Hartford City Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.

 The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 1:00 p.m. until service time.

Mr. Bullington was born on November 8, 1945 in Guntersville, AL to the late Hobert Marcus and Ora Bullington.  He was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol A. Smith Bullington; his parents; one daughter:  Patricia Ann Bullington; one brother:  Francis Eugene Davis; and a special nephew:  Gary Eugene Davis.

Survivors include his daughter:  Pam Cassista (Bert) of Hartford; one son:  Donnie Bullington of Enterprise; one brother:  Bill Bullington (Cathy) of McArthur, CA; one granddaughter:  Brandy Cassista; one niece, Frances Hill; four nephews: Billy and Michael Wright, Jason and Jamie Bullington; and many friends.

Mrs. Martha W. Riley

Mrs. Martha W. Riley of Slocomb passed away Monday, January 30, 2012 at the family residence.  She was 81.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 2, in Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Slocomb with Rev. C. M. Holloway officiating.  Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1149, Slocomb, AL  36375 or to Gentiva Hospice, P.O. Drawer 2127, Dothan, AL  36303.

Mrs. Riley was born on October 4, 1930 in Geneva County, AL to the late James C. and Mary E. White.  She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Randy Kelley, sister, Ruby McCormick, two brothers, Steve White and Walter White. 

Survivors include her daughter:  Diane Weed of Slocomb; two sons:  James C. Kelley (Teresa) of Slocomb, Tony M. Kelley (Carla) of Dothan; former daughter-in-law, Leigh Lawson; nine grandchildren:  Nicole Dillard and Zack Weed, Brittney and Chase Kelley, Elizabeth Meadows, Clay Kelley, Justin and Heather Hinkle, Reagan Kelly; one great grandchild:  Cora Lee Dillard; several nieces and nephews.

MSgt, USAF (Retired), Johnnie M. Tindell

Johnnie M. Tindell, MSgt, USAF (Retired) of Hartford went home to be with the Lord Saturday, January 21, 2012 following a battle with cancer. He was 77.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Monday, January 23, in the Hartford Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Kroll, Rev. Bruce Spivey and Rev. Moody Faulk officiating. Burial will follow in the Hartford City cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.

The family will receive friends at the church on Monday from 9:00 am and continuing until service time. MSgt Tindell was born February 16, 1934 in Hartford to the late Bill and Hildred Matthews Tindell. He was a member of the Hartford Baptist Church. He also owned a local television repair shop in Hartford until his retirement. He proudly served his country for 22 years in the U.S. Air Force having served in Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Japan and various bases in the U.S.

The family asked that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Hartford Baptist Church or to Covenant Hospice, 207 W. Adams St, Dothan, AL 36303.  

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Rebecca Hundley Tindell, Hartford, his sons: Gregory Tindell (DeeAnn), Hartford, Charles Tindell (Cozette), Slocomb, Curtis Tindell (Sharon), Justin, TX, Richard Tindell (Deborah), Hartford; his grandchildren: Rebecca Haines (Brant), Tallahassee, FL, Allyson Tindell, Auburn, AL, Jordan and Aaron Tindell, Hartford, AL, Ashley and Courtney Tindell, Justin, TX, his sisters: Sandra Hall (Edward), Dianne Nicholas (Dale) all of Hartford, Al,  his brother: Bobby Tindell, Grimes, AL; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express a special thanks to all the doctors who cared for MSgt Tindell: Dr. Sherry Roach, Dr. Gary Allen, Dr. John Dunn, Dr. Mark Byard, Dr. Samuel Tarwater and Dr. Melanie Nichols and also to: Tracy Carter, Lindsay Rushing, Amanda Lewis and all other Covenant Hospice of Dothan nurses.    

 

Ms. Adawna Faye Bond

Ms. Adawna “Donna” Faye Bond of Wicksburg passed away Thursday, January 19, 2012 as a result of an automobile accident.  She was 29.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 21, in Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Slocomb with Rev. Buddy Hood officiating and with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing. 

Ms. Bond was born on October 15, 1982 in Houston County, AL to Jerry Marx and Patricia Peterson Bond.  She was a member of Slocomb First United Methodist Church.  

Survivors include her parents, one daughter:  Jade Cameron of Wicksburg; one son:  Jaxon Bodiford of Wicksburg; paternal grandparents:  Jimmie Frank and Willie Jo Bond of Wicksburg; maternal grandparents:  Fred and Janice Peterson of Slocomb; two brothers:  Joey Marx Bond (Karen) of Wicksburg, James Edward Bond (Ashley) of Wicksburg; two nieces and one nephew.

Mrs. Frances Margaret Smith

Mrs. Frances Margaret Smith of Slocomb passed away Monday, January 16, 2012 at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, GA.  She was 86.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 18, in Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.  Burial will follow in Burns Church Cemetery.  

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. 

Mrs. Frances was born on January 27, 1925 in Slocomb, AL to the late Travis and Tommie Smith.  She was a member of Slocomb First United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband:  Stacy Smith; one son:  Guy H. Smith; a son-in-law:  Ray Brown.  

Survivors include two daughters:  Charlotte Smith of Columbus, GA, Cynthia “Shan-Tiffy” Smith of Slocomb; one son:  John T. Smith (Debbie) of Oden, Indiana; six grandchildren:  Glen, Shannon, Scott, Tiffany, Stacey and Brandon; thirteen great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. 

Mr. Daniel (Danny) H. Grantham

Mr. Daniel (Danny) H. Grantham of Malvern went home to our Heavenly Father on Sunday, January 15, 2012 after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer.  He was 58.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18, in Malvern Baptist Church with Rev. Hosea Parker officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing. Mr. Grantham will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Malvern Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 97, Malvern, AL  36349.

His father, Willie J. Grantham, and his stepfather, Charles H. Booth, Sr, preceded Mr. Grantham in death.

He was born on December 11, 1953 in Houston County, AL to the Mary Frances Grantham Booth and the late Willie J. Grantham.  

Survivors include his mother, Mary Frances Booth of Malvern; one brother:  John “Johnny” W. Grantham (Brenda) of Dothan; three sisters:  Kay Sullivan (Bobby) of Hartford, Mary J. Grantham, and Janice Grantham both of Malvern; several stepbrothers and stepsisters; a very special uncle:  Adrian Campbell; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and a host of very special friends.

Mrs. Onnie Jewel Killingsworth

Mrs. Onnie Jewel Killingsworth of Slocomb passed away Saturday, January 14, 2012 at Hartford Health Care.  She was 90.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 17, in Burns Church with Rev. Steve Etheridge officiating.  Burial will follow in Burns Church Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time.  

The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday from 1:00 until service time. 

Mrs. Killingsworth was born on August 29, 1921 in Dale County, AL to the late George H. and Maggie Roberts.  She married W. C. “Bill” Killingsworth.  She grew up in Dale County and attended school at Newton, AL.  She married “Bill” Killingsworth on September 3, 1938 at Newton.  She moved to the Burns Church community in 1942 where she was a member the rest of her life.  She served as the Superintendent and Secretary of Sunday School.  

She was a member of the Slocomb Senior Citizens’ Advisory Board since the early 80’s until October 2008 when she retired as an honorary member.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W. C. “Bill” Killingsworth; parents:  George and Maggie Roberts; one brother:  C. J. (Junior) Roberts; and a nephew:  Edwin Roberts.

Survivors include two nephews who are special:  M. Erwin Roberts of Wicksburg, Ronnie Roberts of Dothan; one niece:  Judy Roberts Saunders of Wicksburg; several great nieces and nephews; three special nephews and their wives:  Rufus and Inga Killingsworth of Southerland, VA, Wallace and Phylis Killingsworth of Lakeland, FL, Robert and Shirley Killingsworth of Phenix City; two special nieces:  Irene Killingsworth Hobson of Columbus, GA and Hilda Roberts of Niceville, FL; special friends:  my church family, Senior Citizen family, Wayne and Sylvia Taylor of Dothan, Nell Dawsey and Nina Williford of Slocomb, all my loved ones at Hartford Nursing Home who all were so sweet and caring.

Mr. James Doffie Knight

Mr. James Doffie Knight of 535 Bethesda Road, Slocomb passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2012 at Signature Healthcare in Graceville.  He was 82.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 12, 2012, in Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Scott Byrd officiating.  Burial will follow in Bethesda Baptist Church Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.

Mr. Knight was born on February 10, 1929 in Geneva County, AL to the late Scott and Lela Holly Knight.  He was employed most of his life in construction work but was also employed with Knight Sanitation.  He also proudly served his country during the Korean War.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Steavy Knight, and two sisters, Laverne Smith and Myrtle Mert.

Mrs. Dessie H. Trawick

Mrs. Dessie H. Trawick of Slocomb passed away Monday, January 9, 2012 at Westside Terrace.  She was 96.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 12, in Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Slocomb with Rev. Phillip Trawick officiating and Mr. Dennis Trawick giving the eulogy.  Burial will follow at 1:00 p.m. in Cowarts Creek Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.

Mrs. Trawick was born on July 8, 1915 in Houston County, AL to the late James L. and Lennie V. Varnum Holland. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Trawick, a  son, Jimmy Ray Trawick; three brothers:  Chalmers Hollon, Lonnie Hollon and Odell Hollon; one sister:  Lennie B. Halstead. 

Survivors include her children:  Joann Buntin (Greg) of Ashford, Larry Gene Trawick (Janet) of Fountain, FL, Randy E. Trawick (Louise) of Slocomb, Olan Trawick (Ruby) of Columbia, Zolan Trawick of Marianna, FL, Dean Arline Braswell of Dothan, Ilona Jackson (Ted) of Daleville; one sister:  Pauline Joiner of Chipley, FL; one brother:  James L. Hollon of Chipley, FL; special daughter-in-law:  Louise Trawick of Slocomb; 18 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; 11 great great grandchildren;  several nieces and nephews.

Mr. James L. Scott

Mr. James L. Scott of Malvern passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at SAMC.  He was 78.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 6, in Malvern Baptist Church with Rev. Hosea Parker officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.  Mr. Scott will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.

Mr. Scott was born on October 6, 1933 in Houston County, AL to the Jesse and Ella Pitts Scott.  He was a member of Malvern Baptist Church.  He was family oriented, hard-working farmer and the memories he gave his family will never be forgotten. 

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Peggy Strickland Scott of Malvern; one son:  Jesse James Scott and his wife, Tammy, of Malvern; two grandchildren:  Jayde Lynn Scott and Jesse James Scott, Jr. both of Malvern; two brothers:  William Scott of Enterprise, Paul Scott (Patricia) of Dothan; seven sisters:  Annie Lee Hall (Harvey) of Dothan, Nancy Summers of Slocomb, Louverne Blackmon (Lunie) of Malvern, Mary Ann Brown (James) of Malvern, Nina Weeks of Abbeville, Bonnie Sykes (Randall) of Dothan, Diane Carver (Ricky) of Enterprise; brothers-in-law:  Jerry Strickland (Katherine), Don Strickland all of Malvern; sister-in-law:  Verlon Spivey (Robert) of Malvern; numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Pat E. Sellers

Mrs. Pat E. Sellers, Registered Nurse, of Wicksburg, Alabama went home to be with Jesus, Friday, December 30, 2011 at Flowers Hospital, Dothan, Alabama.  Pat practiced healthcare in its many facets for over forty-three years. 

Celebration of life services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at Wicksburg Assembly of God Church where Pat was a member.  Pat’s homegoing tribute will be conducted by Pastor, Reverend Tim Simmons, and nephews, Reverend Michael Gibson and Reverend Kevin Hill.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home directing.  Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Houston County Humane Society or the American Cancer Society of Dothan, Alabama.

Pat was born July 22, 1946 in Brunswick, Georgia to Mr. Albert Sidney and Mrs. Louise Brown Evans.  Pat was preceded in death by her father, Mr. Albert Sidney Evans of Brunswick, Georgia, and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William Talmadge (Gladys) Sellers of Wicksburg, Alabama.

Survivors include her husband, Gary E. Sellers of Wicksburg; two children:  Abby and Angus Sellers (The A-Team) of Wicksburg; her mother: Louise Brown Evans of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; her sister:  Helen and husband, Reverend Henry Maxey of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; numerous nieces and nephews that she loved dearly; in-laws:  James Sellers, Wicksburg, Alabama, Don and Linda Sellers, Wicksburg, Alabama, Joyce and Steve Smith, Hartford, Alabama, Sandra Gerleman, Mobile, Alabama. 

Pat’s love for Jesus, family and friends will last us a lifetime.

Mrs. Nettie Thomley Seay

Mrs. Nettie Thomley Seay of Hartford passed away Sunday, January 1, 2012 at Henry County Nursing Home.  She was 88.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 in Goodwater Free Will Baptist Church with Chaplain Joseph L. Haddan officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing. Mrs. Seay will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time.

Mrs. Seay was born on July 18, 1923 in Houston County, AL to the late Allen Oliver and Sallie Lue Lee Thomley. 

She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Thomas Harvey Seay; one sister:  Ouyeda Thomley Draughon; four brothers:  Aubie Thomley, Clyde Thomley, Dolphas Thomley and H. B. Thomley.

Survivors include her two sons:  Ernie T. Seay and wife Susan Meredith Seay of Wicksburg, Thomas H. Seay, Jr. and wife, Sharon Jordan Seay of Athens; two daughters:  Janice Seay Moultrie and husband, Roy A. Moultrie, of Huntsville, Cathy Seay Chitwood of Dothan; three grandsons:  Brian Seay, Sean Moultrie, and Nicholas Chitwood; four granddaughters:  Amy Seay, Carmen Spence, Kristin Chitwood, and Alyssa Chitwood; six great grandchildren:  Brianna Seay, Emily Seay, Michael Henderson, Brendan Spence, Tristan Spence, and Camden Moultrie; one brother:  Shelby Thomley of Dothan; one sister:  Juanita Courtney of Wicksburg; several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Johnnie Lee Cox

Mr. Johnnie Lee Cox of Slocomb passed away Saturday, December 31, 2011 at Noland Hospital in Dothan following an extended illness. He was 76.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 2:00 p.m. in the Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Slocomb with Rev. Dr. Walter Reeder officiating. Burial will follow in the Hurricane United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. At all other times they will be at the family residence on Co Rd 85 South.  

Johnnie was born Nov 8, 1935 in Geneva County to the late Charlie H. and Lettie L. Fondren Cox. He retired after 35 years of service with the GTE Telephone Company and also 35 years in the National Guard. He was a member of the Hurricane United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, three grandchildren: Amanda Leigh Cox, Kayla and Matthew Lee Williams all preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Sarah Myers Cox, Slocomb; daughter, Beth Williams (Randall), Dothan, son, Michael Lee Cox (Jackie), Slocomb, two sisters: Mary Jane Hatcher (Henry), Delores Peterson (Jerry) all of Hartford, three brothers: Henry Cox (Cheryl Sue), Slocomb, Charles Cox, Hartford, Jim Cox (Paula), Lynn Haven, FL; two grandchildren: Payton Williams and Paige Williams, several nieces and nephews. 

 Mrs. Evie Baxley

Mrs. Evie Baxley of Slocomb passed away Friday, December 30, 2011 at her home.  She was 90.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 2, 2012 in New Teamon Baptist Church with Rev. Lee Chorn and Rev. Dicky McAllister officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing. Mrs. Baxley will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to New Teamon Baptist Church Building Fund, 3813 S. County Road 85, Slocomb, AL 36375.

Evie was born on February 17, 1921 to the late Andrew Louis and Sally Stokes Bell.  She was a faithful member of New Teamon Baptist Church for over 70 years where she served in various capacities including Sunday School teacher, VBS teacher, and church clerk.  She was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, married to her husband, Harold, for 42 years before his death in 1982.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Harold; her parents; two sisters, Velma Peavy and Ruth Williams; and two brothers, Lee Bell and Zack Bell.

She is survived by her children:  Daisy Wilkerson (Lynvol) of Graceville; Howell Baxley (Lounell), Tommy Baxley (Dianne), and Duane Baxley (Margaret) all of Slocomb; Greg Baxley (Paula) of Tuscaloosa; ten grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law:  Flora Register (Louis) of Slocomb, Nora Edgerton of Gracevile, Juanita Cruce of Tallahassee; one brother-in-law:  George Baxley of Slocomb; many nieces and nephews; and one dear friend, Mrs. Gladys Bass.

Mr. Billy Jerry Hawkins

Mr. Billy Jerry Hawkins of Malvern passed away Thursday, December 29, 2011 at Noland Hospital.  He was 75.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 1, 2012, at Malvern Baptist Church with Rev. Hosea Parker and Rev. Larry Newton officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing. Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to Malvern Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 97, Malvern, Alabama  36349. 

The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday from 1:30 and continue until service time.  At all other times, the family will be at the family residence.

Mr. Hawkins was born on November 8, 1936 in Geneva County, AL to the late William Albert and Ruth (Merritt) Hawkins.  He was a member of Malvern Baptist Church where he also served as a deacon.  He was in the construction business for 40 years as a homebuilder and a real estate broker.  He owned and operated Hawkins Construction Company in Malvern and was a member of the Homebuilders Association of Dothan.

Mr. Hawkins was preceded in death by three brothers:  Earl, Ralph and Ronnie Hawkins; three sisters:  Mildred Merrill, Annie Ruth Saunders and Bobbie Herring. 

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Ollie Jean (Spivey) Hawkins of Malvern; one son and daughter-in-law:  Jerry and Paula Hawkins of Malvern; one daughter:  Sheila Hawkins of Malvern; two grandchildren:  David Hawkins and Kaelyn Reeves; one sister and brother-in-law:  Jimmie Saranthus (Jake) of Goldsboro, NC; several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Margaret Jean Weatherton

Mrs. Margaret Jean Weatherton of Donalsonville, GA passed away Tuesday, December 27, 2011 at Flowers Hospital.  She was 69.

Mr. Robert Manson Howard, Jr.

Mr. Robert Manson Howard, Jr. of Slocomb passed away Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at his home.  He was 58.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, December 26, from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m., with no other services to follow. 

Mr. Howard was born on September 17, 1953 in Opelika, AL.

His father, Robert Howard, and two brothers, James Winford and Timothy Keith Howard, preceded him in death.

Billy J. "Bill" Sale

      Mr. Billy J.”Bill” Sale of Wicksburg AL passed away Thursday, December 15, 2011 in Tuscaloosa, AL at DCH hospital.  He was 82.   

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Monday, December 19, in the Pilgrim Home Baptist Church with Rev. Mr. Sale was born on August 21, 1929 in Clarkton, MO to the late James E. and Laurene Cox Sale (who died when he was a baby). He was a member of Pilgrim Home Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son: Terry Lee Sale, 3 sisters: Martha Jane Sale, Betty McMillin and Margaret Burleson, brother: James H. Sale and the mother who lovingly raised him, Alverda Sale.

Mrs. Voncile James

Mrs. Voncile James of Slocomb passed away Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at Flowers Hospital.  She was 81.

Mrs. Voncile was born on May 18, 1930 in Geneva County, AL to the late J. C. and Ruby Robinson Hughes.  She was a member of Burns Assembly of God Church. 

She was preceded in death by a son:  Raymond Gene James; grandson:  Anthony Thomley, son-in-law:  James Parker, and father of her children:  Norman James.

Survivors include two daughters:  Shirley Hatcher (Roger), Kathy Parker all of Slocomb; one son:  Johnny James (Becky) of Slocomb; four sisters:  Mert Smith (Lloyd) of Midland City, Mary Holland of Dothan; Carolyn Fowler (Rodney) of Cottonwood, Evelyn Robinson of Orlando, FL; one brother:  Johnny Mack Hughes (Martha) of Slocomb; two grandchildren:  Dustin Thomley and Don Wilson (Elizabeth); three great grandchildren:  Cameron, Brianna and Braden Thomley; several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Peggy Adams

Mrs. Peggy Jean Adams of Harpers Joy Road, Dothan passed away Tuesday, December 13, 2011 at SAMC.  She was 71.

Mrs. Adams was born on June 9, 1940 in West Point, MS to the late Gene and Melba Pearson.  She was of the Baptist faith.

Her husband, Robert Ray Adams and a daughter, Peggy Renee Brown, preceded her in death. 

Survivors include her one daughter:  Becky Tarwater (Randy) of Dothan; two sons:  Charles R. “Bobby” Adams (Lorrie), Russell Eugene Adams (Michelle) all of Dothan; 13 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Aron C. Gilley

Mr. Aron C. Gilley of Midland City passed away Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at his home.  He was 68.

Mr. Gilley was born on May 24, 1943 in Geneva County, Alabama to the late Aron Clifton and Allie Gilley.  He attended Hartford Community Church. 

His parents and two sisters preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Marie Gilley of Midland City; two daughters:  Danielle Justice (Jason) of Midland City, Kimberly Snell (Bryan) of Gulfport, MS; two brothers:  Melvin Gilley (Sherry) of Dawson, GA, Randall Sykes (Bonnie) of Dothan; one sister:  Alice Nicholson (Richard) of Dothan; five grandchildren:  Allyson, Jordyn and Cason Justice, Spencer and Bryley Snell; several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Tony Kelly

Mr. Tony M. Kelly of Dothan passed away Monday, December 12, 2011 at SAMC.  He was 68.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday in Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Slocomb with Rev. Larry Newton officiating.  Burial will follow in Slocomb City Cemetery (adjacent to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church) with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing. Mr. Kelly was born on February 15, 1943 in Geneva County, AL to the late General Clyde and Agnes Black Kelly.  Mr. Kelly grew up in Slocomb, attended Slocomb High School and University of Alabama, Huntsville.

Of Mr. Kelly’s jobs, his years spent in the South Pacific, Kwajelein Missile Range, was his favorite.  He was hired for three months but stayed for thirteen years.  He loved and was faithful to his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Parker and Charles Kelly, and sisters, Mary Virginia Kelly Murphy and Emma Frances Kelly Wood.

Survivors include his sister:  Kathryn Kelly Tidwell
(Jessie Ralph) of Dothan; and a brother:  Max Kelly (Jackie) of Dothan; two sister-in-laws:  Carrie Clark Kelly of Dothan and Helen Nelson Kelly of Pensacola.  He is survived by a host of much-loved nieces and nephews.  He is also survived by a large much appreciated and loved extended family.

Mr. Millard Cecil Snell

Mr. Millard Cecil Snell of Slocomb passed away Monday, December 5, 2011 at SAMC.  He was 89.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 8, in Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Lee Chorn and Rev. Phil Baxley officiating.  Burial will follow in Whitaker United Methodist Church Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.

Mr. Snell was born on August 27, 1922 in Geneva County, AL to the late Mack and Dovie Vickers Snell.  He was a member of Noma Assembly of God Church. 

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Eunice Snell of Slocomb; one daughter:  Bettie Bush (Leroy) of Slocomb; one son:  Cecil Snell (Judy) of Newnon, GA; four grandchildren:  Susan Warren (Parks),  David Bush (Michelle), Chris Bush (Christy), Ron Snell (Kim); 10 great grandchildren:  Steven, Sarah, Carter, Ben, Lanie, Caitlan, Magen (Grant), Annamarie, J. P., and Mack; one great great grandchild:  Evan; several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Adeleene Singletary

Mrs. Adeleene Singletary of the Fadette Community passed away Friday, December 2, 2011 at Hartford Health Care.  She was 90.

 Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, December 5, 2011 at New Hinson Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Newton, Rev. Teddy Ward and Rev. Dennis Singletary officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.  Mrs. Singletary will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time.  Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to New Hinson Baptist Church.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m.

Mrs. Singletary was born on August 13, 1921 in Dale County, AL to the late Ezzie Robert and Ella Elmore.  She was a member of New Hinson Baptist Church and had resided in the Fadette community most of her life.  She retired from Van Heusen Corporation after 30 years.

 She was preceded in death by her husband:  Johnny Webb Singletary, one brother:  Otis Elmore, and her sisters:  Bertha Watkins and Bertie Cobb.  

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law:  Phil and Vicky Singletary of Slocomb, Benny Singletary of Fadette; grandchildren:  Mark Singletary (Melanie), Chad Singletary (Terri) Brandt Singletary (Kirsty) and Tricia Janne Singletary; great grandchildren:  Marlena Singletary, Madison Singletary, Brett Singletary, Jack Singletary, Taylor Everett, Sydney Everett, Austin Floyd, Sawyer Singletary and Sage Singletary; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Singletary’s grandsons and great grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Mr. Raymond Andrews

Mr. Raymond Allen Andrews of Hartford passed away Thursday, December 1, 2011 at the family residence.  He was 61.

Mr. Andrews was born on March 21, 1950 in Jacksonville, FL to the late Sanford E. Andrews, Sr. and Faye Krutz Andrews.  He was of the Methodist faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents as well as a brother, Michael David Andrews.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Andrews of Hartford; three daughters:  Dorothy Peters (Gerald) of Slocomb, Doris McDaniel of Montgomery, Dora Ellen Andrews of Hartford; one son:  Alton Stephens (Joy) of Dothan; one special granddaughter:  Lauren Fay Andrews of Hartford; two brothers:  Sandy Andrews (Gloria) of California, Robert Andrews (Betty) of Dothan; twelve grandchildren; several great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a very  special friend:  Jaime Cole.

Ms. Brenda Joyce Greathouse Smith

Ms. Brenda Joyce Greathouse Smith of Hartford passed away Monday, November 21, 2011.  She was 56.

  Mrs. Lillie Hunter McNeal Ketchum

Mrs. Lillie Hunter McNeal Ketchum, a lifelong resident of Hartford went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ early Tuesday morning.  She was 97.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 25, 2011 in the Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Slocomb with Rev. Moody Faulk and Dr. Ralph Brannon officiating.  Burial will follow in Hartford City Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.  

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until service time.  At all other times, the family will be at the home of Jeff and Nina Brannon.

Known affectionately by her family as “Mammaw” and Hunter to her friends, she was blessed with a loving, caring and hospitable spirit.  Born on October 6, 1914 to the late Bud and Adele McNeal, Hunter grew up in rural Geneva County and worked most of her adult life in retail sales at The Fashion Shop located on the square in Hartford.  Married at age 14 to Roy Brannon, they were blessed with two sons Marcon L. “Mutt” and James M. “Jeff” Brannon.  Roy passed away in 1970 and Hunter married James Ketchum (Daddy K) in 1981 and was blessed with another family that she loved dearly.  Following Daddy K’s death in 1984 she remained a widow but enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.  She was blessed with good health and did not have to take any regular medicines until age 94.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands:  Roy Brannon and James Ketchum; brothers:  Leonard McNeal, Lamar McNeal, Perry Clyde McNeal and Newton Frazier McNeal; sisters:  Estelle McNeal Shields and Louise McNeal Burkhead; daughter-in-law:  Betty Brannon; stepsons:  William Ketchum and James Edward Ketchum; step great-grandson:  Justin Ketchum; and step great granddaughter:  Courtney Bright.

Mrs. Marilyn Johnson Ruppel

Marilyn Johnson Ruppel of Hartford passed away Saturday, November 19, 2011 at UAB hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the age of 56.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Tuesday, November 22, 2011 in the Sorrells Funeral Home chapel in Slocomb with Rev. James “Red” Coleman officiating. Burial will follow in the Gardens of Memory cemetery.

Marilyn was born February 4, 1955 in Dale County, Alabama to the late Clifton Johnson and Shirley Young. Until her recent illness, she was employed as a correction officer with the Geneva County Sheriff Department.

Her husband, John Ruppel, two sisters: Wanda Bishop and Judy Jackson, as well as one brother, Buddy Johnson all preceded her in death. 

Survivors include four daughters: Julie Donald, Skipperville AL, Shannon Stephens and Casey Riley both of Hartford AL, Kelly Bennett (Dustin), Enterprise AL; two step children: Michelle Woods (David) and Johnny Ruppel all of Midland City, AL;  two  sisters: Carolyn Culliver, Wicksburg AL and Sheila Young, Dunnellon FL; two brothers: Dean Young (Kristine), Macon GA and Corey Johnson, Phoenix Arizona; five  grandchildren: Taylor and Dusty Beckham, MacKenzie Stephens, Dakota Bennett and Presley Blu Riley; and  several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Gladys Smith Cox

Mrs. Gladys Smith Cox of Slocomb passed away Monday, November 14, 2011 at Columbus Hospice in Columbus GA.  She was 85.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 19, in Memory Hill Cemetery with Rev. Ted Spencer officiating and with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.  Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to the Methodist Church League of Good Samaritans, 2001 South Lee Street, Americus, GA 31709.

Mrs. Cox was born on March 20, 1926 in Hartford, AL to the late Edgar B. and Bertie S. Smith.  She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Slocomb.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Raymon Cox, as well as one brother, Royce R. Smith, and two sisters: Carmie Jean Hall and Edna Smith Marsh.

Mrs. Annie Laurie Collins Reeves

Mrs. Annie Laurie Collins Reeves of the Jellico Community passed away Sunday, November 13, 2011 at the family residence following an extended illness.  She was 87.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 15, 2011 in Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Slocomb with Rev. Wendell Holmes and Rev. Mrs. Reeves was born in Geneva County on July 24, 1924 to Jamsey Joshua Collins and Ada Campbell Collins, both of whom preceded her in death.  Annie Laurie graduated from Wicksburg High School in 1941 where she was an All-State basketball player on their state championship team.

She married Billy Hillman Reeves on August 6, 1941.  Annie Laurie was a devoted wife and mother to their five children.  During her life Annie Laurie was a full time homemaker in every sense of the word, except for attending Troy State College and managing Reeves Grocery Store for a period of time.  She was involved in the lives of her children, faithfully attending their school activities, and encouraging them to be true to their faith and family.  She was a steadfast and loyal partner to her husband, Bill, throughout their marriage and in his ministry.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Rev. Billy Hillman Reeves; her parents, Jamsey J. and Ada Campbell Collins; her sister, Maureen Collins Thomley; her brothers, Norman Collins and Forrest Kenneth Collins.

Survivors include one daughter:  Billie Anne Lovrich and her husband, Frank, of Wicksburg; four sons:  Rodney Reeves and his wife, Sherry, of Concord, GA, Douglas Reeves and his wife, Terry, of Wicksburg, Donnie Reeves Sr. and his fiancé, Gina, of Dothan, David Reeves and his wife, Melinda, of Montgomery; nine grandchildren:  Bill Lovrich (Annette), Marty Lovrich (Holli), Holly Reeves Ryan (Casey), Billy Reeves (Heidi), Joshua Reeves (Randi), Donnie Reeves Jr., Christopher Reeves, Patrick Reeves (Molly) and Ashley Reeves Berry (Ramon); six great grandchildren:  Camden, Cate and Allie Grace Lovrich, Bryant and Brielle Berry, Matthew James Reeves;  two sisters-in-law:  Betty Reeves Palmer and Wanda Collins; numerous special nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Bill Lovrich, Marty Lovrich, Billy Reeves, Joshua Reeves, Donnie Reeves Jr., Patrick Reeves, Christopher Reeves, James Aman, Kenneth Spruell.

Mrs. Jewell Dunn Burch

Mrs. Jewell Dunn Burch of Dothan and formerly of Hartford passed away Thursday, November 10, 2011.  She was 87.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 13, 2011 in Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Slocomb with Rev. Johnny Belcher officiating.  Burial will follow in Hartford City Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.  Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to Hartford Senior Citizens Center.

Mrs. Burch was born on August 8, 1924 in Pensacola, FL to the late Cossie Heman and Mattie Lou Burch.  She was a member of Hartford Baptist Church.  She worked many years at Phillips-Van Heusen Corporation. 

Her husband, James Robert Burch, her parents and one son, Buddy Burch, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law:  Larry and Sara Burch of Dothan, Bob and Sharon Burch of Auburn; four grandchildren:  Brad Burch (Gretchen), Clay Burch (Kim), Amy Patterson (Tim) and Jeffrey Burch; seven great grandchildren:  Jacob, Matthew, Hannah, Ty, Michael, James and MaKayla; several nieces and nephews.

Mr. John Edward Moring

Mr. John Edward Moring of Slocomb passed away Monday, November 7, 2011.  He was 62.

A celebration of his life will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 10, in East Mount Zion United Methodist Church, 1590 Highway 173, Graceville, FL.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of your choice. 

Mr. Edward was born on December 26, 1948 in Geneva County, AL to the late John Dallas and Norma V. Hall Moring.  He was a member of East Mount Zion United Methodist Church.

His parents as well as one sister, Brenda Moring, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Grace Elaine Moring of Slocomb; one son:  Michael Moring (Angela) of Defuniak Springs, FL; one daughter:  Tracy Lynn Moring of Dothan; one step-son:  Charles Richard Farrell II (Stacey) of Albany, GA; two step-daughters:  Yvonne Soule (Bill) of Woodstock, GA, Jan Reynolds (Richard) of Concord, NC; one sister:  Faye Moring of Hartford; twelve grandchildren; three great grandchildren.

Mr. George Lamar Sullivan

Mr. George Lamar Sullivan of Hartford passed away Sunday, November 6, 2011 at Campbellton-Graceville Hospital.  He was 88. 

Funeral services will be held at Pondtown United Methodist Church at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 with Rev. Donna Cumbie and Rev. Neal Brown officiating.   Burial will follow in Hartford City Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.

Mr. Sullivan was born on October 26, 1923 in Geneva County, AL to the late Gerald Dewey and Cleopatra Hatcher Sullivan.  He attended Poundtown United Methodist Church.  The first few years of his adult life was spent serving in the U.S. Navy where he trained as a dental assistant.  Upon his return home to Hartford, he spent the rest of his life with the exception of the last three years.  He entered the family business with his father erecting windmills and also doing plumbing and electrical work.  Later on he was employed in the LP gas business for 20 years before he became employed with Anderson Peanut Company in Hartford, where he worked until his retirement.  Upon his retirement, one of his greatest joys was making chocolate fudge.  He became known fondly as “The Fudge Master.”  He spent countless hours making the sweet confection which he always gave to family and friends in the community. 

His wife, Mary Louise Sullivan, and one brother, Truett Sullivan, preceded him in death.

Survivors include one daughter: Mary Ann Fulford (Mack); two sons:  Bobby Sullivan (Kay) and Tim Sullivan (Kerri), all of Hartford; two brothers:  James Sullivan (Frances) of Pensacola FL, and Gerald D. Sullivan (Joan) of Huntsville; four grandchildren:  Wayland Fulford (Connie), Alana Adams (Jeff), Kade Sullivan and Zachary Sullivan; four great grandchildren:  Alyssa Bonner, Haylee Bonner, Hunter Adams and Madie Adams; sister-in-law:  Lorene Sullivan; several nieces and nephews.

Martha Culverhouse Barner

Mrs. Martha Barner of Slocomb passed away Saturday, November 5, 2011 at Flowers Hospital. She was 78. 

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, November 7, 2011 from Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Slocomb with Rev. Al Leach officiating. Burial will follow in Slocomb City Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday beginning at 2:00 and continue until service time.

Martha was born on January 2, 1933 in Geneva County to the late Marvin and Eva Trawick Culverhouse. She was a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Her husband Walt Barner and sister; Sally Culverhouse Watkins preceded her in death.

Survivors include one daughter: Jan Barner Butler, one son: Glenn (Birdie) Barner, both of Slocomb, Al; one grandson: Jeffrey Gilley of Wicksburg, Al.

Mrs. Thelma (Sis) Lois Carnes

Mrs. Thelma (Sis) L. Carnes of Slocomb went home to be with her Lord and Savior at her residence on Sunday, October 30, 2011.  She was 67.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 2, in Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Slocomb with Rev. Terry Glover and Rev. Teddy Ward officiating.  Burial will follow in Union Baptist Church Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.

After a long joyous life with her family, she was escorted into Heaven with God’s Amazing Grace.  As she departed this life for Heaven’s Kingdom, Thelma (Sis) will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother as well as a treasured friend by many.  Thelma’s greatest joy was her family. |

Thelma was born on May 12, 1944 in Hawkinsville, GA to the late Clinton and Rosie Middlebrooks.  She was a member of Union Baptist Church.  Thelma worked at Tri-Glas in Daleville, AL for 23 years as a Supervisor. 

Her parents as well as a brother, Robert Griffin, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband of 40 years:  Earl Carnes of Slocomb; one daughter:  Connie Carnes of Slocomb; two sons:  James Carnes and his fiancé, Nicki Watson, of Slocomb, Tim Carnes and his wife, Kendra, of Louisville; two sisters and brothers-in-law:  Nedra and Terry Glover, Susie and Darrell Meadors all of Slocomb; eight grandchildren; one great grandchild; several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Sandra Faye Woodham Worley

Mrs. Sandra Faye Woodham Worley of Cottonwood passed away Wednesday, October 26, 2011.  She was 63. 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 29, in Union Hill Baptist Church (Cottonwood Highway) with Rev. Mike Glenn, Rev. George Thompson and Rev. Sandra was born on October 3, 1948 in Geneva County, AL to Dessie Mae Woodham and the late Ponie B. Woodham.  She was employed in the Buyer Material Management Department with Spun Steel in Dothan for over 20  years.  Sandra was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church.

Her husband, Joe Worley, as well as her Dad preceded her in death.

Survivors include her mother:  Dessie Mae Woodham of Slocomb; two sisters: Shelia Smith, Jean Kirkland (Lamar) all of Slocomb; one brother:  Jerry Woodham (Sonia) of Dothan; two nephews:  Corey Kirkland (Amy) and Charles Smith; one great niece:  Henley Grace Kirkland.

George W. Wright, Sr. of Slocomb passed away Monday, October 24, 2011 at SAMC.

Mr. James L. Miller

Mr. James L. Miller of Hartford passed away Monday, October 10, 2011 at Hartford.  He was 98.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 12, 2010 in Hartford Baptist Church with Dr. Ralph Brannon and Rev. Chris Kroll officiating.  Burial will follow in Hartford City Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hartford Baptist Church, 105 East Burch Street, Hartford, AL  36344.

Mr. Miller was born on November 18, 1912 in rural Geneva County.  He was the son of the late Emmett T. Miller and Doshie Meadows Miller.  His wife of 71 years, Edna Peacock Miller, preceded him in death along with his parents, four brothers and two sisters.  His brother’s names were Marcus Miller, Ray Miller, Horace Miller and Leonard Miller. 

Mr. Miller lived in different places in and around Geneva County in his formative years.  After what he thought was an abbreviated childhood, he joined the Army not only to serve his country, but to help support his family.  He met and married Edna Peacock in 1940 and they spent the next 27 years as a military family.  His service included assignments in Turkey, the Philippines, Alaska, Japan, Germany and many places throughout the U.S.  He retired in 1961 and the family moved back to Hartford to begin a new life.

Mr. Miller attended Wallace Community College on the GI Bill in order to obtain certification in T.V., radio and electronic repair.  He owned and operated Hartford T.V Repair Service for several years and then worked with Civil Service at Fort Rucker.  He also farmed and raised cattle; he loved the land and enjoyed doing that most of all.

He was always the spiritual leader of our family and proudly took that role.  His Christian influence dominated every area of his life.  His manner and smiles were infectious.  Everyone loved him.  He was the most devoted husband to his wife, Edna.  Even when she was bedridden in the latter years, he was constantly by her side.

Jim is survived by two sons:  Gary (Peggy) Miller and Jimmy (Eileen) Miller of Hartford; four grandsons:  Lane (Katie) Miller of Dothan, Greg (Cricket) Miller of Birmingham, Chris (Amie) Miller of Hartford, David (Brooke) Miller of Hartford; two step-grandchildren:  Patsy (Darius) Culverson of Donaldsonville, GA and David (Rhonda) Yeomans of Slocomb; five great grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. 

His nephews will serve as pallbearers.  The Barraca Men’s Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers.

We would like to thank the staff at Hartford Health Care, especially Eric, Misty, Amanda, Kathy and Michelle.  We would also like to express our appreciation to Southern Hospice for the care given to our father.  Mr. Miller will be missed.

Mr. Ewell Hinson

Mr. Ewell Hinson of Fadette passed away Tuesday, October 4, 2011.  He was 96.

Mr. Hinson was born on June 7, 1915 in Geneva County, AL to the late John A. and Ethel Skipper Hinson.  He was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.  Mr. Hinson served in the Navy for six years and was a World War II veteran.  He loved to fish and was a lifelong farmer after his tour in the Navy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers:  Preston, Sam and Buck Hinson; two grandsons:  Keith Hinson and Andy Hinson.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years:  Ruth Hinson of Fadette; two sons and daughters-in-law:  George and Cheryl Hinson, James and Virginia Hinson all of Fadette; one sister:  Angela Peterson of Rosepine, LA; two grandchildren:  Michael Hinson, Holly Dotson (Grant); four great grandchildren:  Hillery, Brittney, Baron and Annie; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Mrs. Sybil Grace Hinson Etheridge

Mrs. Sybil Grace Hinson Etheridge, wife of Henry Etheridge, passed away Friday, September 30, 2011.  She was 83.

Grace was born on October 9,1927, in Geneva County Alabama. She was the mother of three children and delighted in her eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. She loved flowers, birds, sewing and making friends.

She has gone to rest in the loving arms of her mother, Allie Mae Bedsole Hinson, her father, William Grady Hinson, her brothers, William Harlon Hinson and Leon Thomas Hinson, and four other siblings who died in infancy. 

She lives on in the hearts and memories of her daughters:  Keitha Givens Whitaker and husband, Bob, and Peggy Givens Hoover and husband, Woody; her son, Mark Hinson Givens and wife, Phyllis; her grandchildren: Heather Whitaker Alfonso and husband, Donny; Wyn Hoover and wife, Kim; Andy Whitaker; Pippin Whitaker and husband, Steve Lize; Keri Hoover Morgan and husband, Arch; Ashley Givens Bieliauskas and husband, Billy; Tyler Givens; and Dillon Givens; her great-grandchildren: Mason Nathanial Alfonso, Keegan Grady Alfonso; Aleksy Keith Whitaker-Lize and Kepler John Whitaker-Lize; Alden Chase Hoover, Jack Bennett Hoover;  Barrett Arch Morgan, Collin Arch Morgan; Austin Bieliauskas and Bayley Bieliauskas; two nieces, two nephews and several great nephews and great nieces; cousins; and everywhere she's lived, friends too numerous to name.

Ms. Wanda Jean Porter Vann

Ms. Wanda Jean Porter Vann of Dothan but formerly of Wicksburg passed away Saturday, September 24, 2011.  She was 61.

SFC (Retired) Larry Wayne DePriest of Slocomb (Malvern Community) passed away Wednesday, September 21, 2011.  He was 64.

Mr. DePriest was born on December 11, 1946 in Laurel, MS to Era Ernestine and the late Henry Howard DePriest.  He was a member of Malvern Baptist Church where he also served as a Deacon.  He retired after 26 years of admirable service in the U.S. Army; he served honorably as a veteran of the Vietnam and Desert Shield/Storm Conflicts.

Mrs. Sue Smith of Slocomb passed away Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at Flowers Hospital.  She was 71.

Mrs. Sue was born on November 23, 1939 in Hartford, AL to the late Chester and Bea White Hall.  She was a faithful member of the Hannah Sunday School Class and First Baptist Church of Slocomb.  Mrs. Sue was an employee of Peel’s Grocery Market and Slocomb Market Place for many years.  She enjoyed volunteering with the Wiregrass Shriners and was a loyal fan of BAMA football and the Slocomb Red Tops.  She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend.

Her parents as well as her first husband, Robert L. Rouse, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, J. C. Smith; her children:  Brenda and Joe Garozzo, Ronnie Rouse, Cheryl and Tim Hatcher and Janice and Mike McAllister; her siblings:  Edward and Sandra Hall, John Wendell and Sarah Hall; grandchildren:  SGT Joshua and Ashley Herrington, Lynsey and Daniel Sparks, Andrew Garozzo and Sarah Silvia, Brendon Herrington, Matt and Chelsea Hatcher, Drs. Ms. Julia Christine Mills Trant

     Ms. Julia Christine Trant of Slocomb came to the end of her journey and Heaven received a beautiful angel on Monday, September 12, 2011.  She was 68.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on  Tuesday, September 13, in Christian Home Baptist Church with Rev. Fred Bacher officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.

The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday from 1:00 until service time. 

Christine was born on August 30, 1943 in Geneva County, AL to the late Wiley and Annie L. Mills.

Survivors include one daughter:  Virginia “Gina”  Morgan of Hartford; one son:  Gerald “Jerry” H.  Morgan, Jr. (Misty) of Dothan; sisters:  Annette Linton (Doug) of Ozark, Bobbie Santos (Ricky) of Dothan, Ruth Gamble of Web, a brother:  Connie Mill (Lucy) of Warm Springs, GA; grandchildren:  Summer Morgan Rosto, Camilo Rosteo, Jordan Morgan-Ashley, River Morgan, Bryant Roney; great grandchildren:  Fabiola Lucas, LiLianna Rostro, McKinley Morgan.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Annette and Doug Linton for all their help during our Mother’s sickness.  They would also like to express their appreciation to the nurses on the 6th floor at SAMC for the compassion shown during her hospitalization.  Alacare nurses have been wonderful, especially Kat, by providing wonderful care and comfort not only to our Mother but also to the family.

Pallbearers will be Jordan, Jeff, Johnathon, Greg, Doug and Ricky.

J. Earl Gillespie

Mr. J. Earl Gillespie of Hartford passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at Flowers Hospital. He was 82.

 

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 11, 2011 in the Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Slocomb with his son, Rev. Roger Earl Gillespie officiating.

 

Mr. Gillespie was born on March 13, 1929 in Montgomery County, AL to the late Joshua and Ethel Gillespie.

The mother of his children, Virginia Gibson Gillespie and three sisters preceded Mr. Gillespie in death.

 

Survivors include his wife: Mercedes Gillespie of Hartford; one daughter: Rhonda Kay Gatlin (Christopher) of Boulder City, NV; one son: Roger Earl Gillespie (Faye) of North Augusta, SC; two sisters: Iona Fontaine and Joan Williams (Floyd) both of Montgomery, AL; one brother: Paul Gillespie (Elise) of Macon, GA; four grandchildren: Ashley, Bradley, Matthew, and Ryan; and two great-grandchildren.

 

Mrs. Eloise Sasser Brannon

Mrs. Eloise Sasser Brannon of Malvern passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at Flowers Hospital.  She was 85.
 
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 10, 2011 in the Piney Grove Assembly of God Church with Rev. Larry Carpenter and Rev. Brian Presley officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.  Mrs. Brannon will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time.  


 The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. 
 
Mrs. Brannon was born on September 9, 1925 in Geneva County to the late James U. and Lou Sasser.  She attended Piney Grove Assembly of God for many years.  She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed.
 
Her husband, Shelby Columbus Brannon, several brothers and sisters, and a son-in-law: Dennis Woodham preceded her in death.
 
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law:  Cathy and Roy Ellenburg of Dothan, Connie and Jesse Dunn of Wicksburg; two sons and a daughter-in-law:  Johnny Brannon, Ronnie and Janet Brannon all of Dothan; four sisters: Evelyn Carpenter of Wicksburg, Lillie Pope, Jeanette Miller, and Gladys Jones (Bill) all of Columbus GA; one brother: David Sasser (Sue) of Columbus GA; nine grandchildren:  Jonathan Brannon, Eric Ellenburg, Shanda Drexler, Clay Ellenburg, Sandy Sanders, Carrie Hunt, Steven Brannon, Valerie Wall, and Kimberly Brannon; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
 
Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

Robert Edward Smith

Mr. Robert Edward Smith of Slocomb passed away Saturday evening, September 3, 2011 at the family residence following an extended illness. He was 71.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Tuesday from the Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Slocomb with Rev. Don Hadden officiating. Burial will follow in the Whitaker United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.

Mr. Smith was born May 5, 1940 in Geneva County to the late David Edward and Annie Ruth Miller Smith. He was a member of the Whitaker United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Gaye Smith, Slocomb, 1 daughter: Vickey Marsh, Dothan, 1 son: Michael Edward Smith (Katie), Chicago, ILL, 3 step-sons: Tommy Smith (Maria), Honduras, Terry Smith (Karla), Blue Springs, AL, Todd Smith (Lisa), Baker Hill, AL, sister: Ruby Hagler (Bobby), Slocomb,  brothers: Foy Smith (Clara), Livingston, AL, Kenneth Smith, Fadette, AL, 7 grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. 

Mable Battles Singletary

Mrs. Mable Battles Singletary of 114 St. Johns Drive, Dothan, Al. passed away on Monday, August 15, 2011 at her home. She fought ovarian cancer with courage and grace for the past 6 years. Mable was 76 years old.

 

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 18, 2011 at Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Slocomb with her nephew Dr. J. Chris Adams officiating. Burial will follow at New Teamon Baptist Church Cemetery. Mable was born August 18, 1934 in Holmes County Florida to the late Henry and Lessie Battles. She was a loving wife; consummate stay at home mother and a devoted grandmother. Mable was also a member of New Teamon Baptist Church and when able, enjoyed being a part of the ladies prayer group. She was a 1951 graduate of Slocomb High School.

 

In addition to her parents; her brothers: Ouidas, Gerald and Jack Battles, infant brother Huey; and sister: Martha Joy Adams, as well as a special sister in law: Shirley Collins all preceded her in death.

 

Surviving relatives include husband of 58 years: John Singletary; son: Rick Singletary; and daughter: Tami Singletary Hudson; grandchildren include: Mary Cathryn and Sara Singletary, Scotty, Britney and Ashley Hudson; brother’s in law, sister’s in law and several nieces and nephews.

 

Pallbearers will be Tim Smith, Shannon Collins, Aubrey Battles, Kevin Battles, Bobby Battles, and Jeffery Jones.

 

The family wishes to thank the Wiregrass Hospice nurses Lindsey, Lillian, Pam and Lori for all their love and care provided to the family.

Mr. Roger Allen McSwain (56) and Miss Savannah Blu McSwain (9) both of Gordon passed away Sunday, August 7, 2011. 

 A celebration of Life for these “Two Peas in a Pod” will be held in the Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel at 2:00 p.m.  Saturday, August 13, 2011 with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to service time.

Roger was born on May 8, 1955 in Geneva County to the late William and Frances McSwain. 

He was preceded in death by one brother: Ronnie McSwain, and his loving daughter: Savannah Blu McSwain.

Survivors include his two sons: Joshua A. McSwain (Rebecca) of Brewton and Isaiah G.W. McSwain of Fadette; three daughters: Nikki Daniels, Jamie Smedley (Aaron), and Leslie Holloman all of Dothan, one brother:  Randy McSwain of Mobile; seven grandchildren: Keith and Levi McSwain, Tyler and Logan Napper, Kaylie Daniels, Jocelynn and Jazzlynn Smedley.

 Savannah was born on April 10, 2002 in Houston County to Sherri Clark McSwain of Dothan and the late Roger Allen McSwain of Gordon.

In addition to her loving father, Savannah was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather: Jimmy L. Clark and one uncle: Michael Todd Murphy.

In addition to her mother, Savannah is survived by three sisters: Nikki Daniels, Jamie Smedley (Aaron), and Leslie Holloman all of Dothan; two brothers: Joshua McSwain (Rebecca) of Brewton and Isaiah G.W. McSwain of Fadette; maternal grandmother: Rebecca Dole (Eddie) of Dothan; one aunt: Terri Sims (Allen) of Wicksburg; one uncle: Randy McSwain of Mobile; and several nieces and nephews.

Paul Ray Kelley

Mr. Paul Ray Kelley of Slocomb passed away Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at the family residence.  He was 81. 

Funeral services will be held at 11: a.m. Friday, Aug. 12, 2011 in Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dan Raley officiating.  Burial will follow in Union Baptist Church Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.

 The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. 

 Mr. Kelley was born on August 9, 1930 in Geneva County to the late Malcom and Susie Lee Kelley.  He was a member of the Slocomb First Assembly of God Church.  Mr. Kelley owned and operated a farm and cattle ranch for many years, and was an avid fisherman.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

 Mr. Kelley was preceded in death by his brother:  Gene Kelley; one sister:  Avalou Kelley. 

Survivors include his wife:  Mary Jean Harris Kelley; two sons:  Billy Ray Kelley of Slocomb and Paul Fletcher Kelley of Slocomb; two grandchildren: Ryan Kelley (Whitney) of Dothan, Summer Kelley (Thad) Tiner of Eufaula; five great grandchildren: Cohen and Claire Kelley of Dothan, and Jade, Emily, Reagan Tiner of Eufaula.  

Mrs. Audrey Quick 

Mrs. Audrey Quick of Slocomb (Fadette Community) passed away Sunday, August 7, 2011 at the Signature Health Care Center in Graceville . She was 82

 Mrs. Quick was born on October 3, 1928 in Geneva County to the late T.J. and Daisey Jones Davis. She was a member of Malvern Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by one daughter: Linda Sue Yeomans, and one brother: Paschal Davis. 

 Survivors include her husband: Charlie Quick of Faydette; four daughters: Pat Oddo of Ft. Myers FL, Sarah Browning, (Larry C.) of Lehigh Acres FL, Cathy Sue Kolonusz of Compass Lake FL, Charlene Moreno (Fil) of Dana NC; five sons: John R. Quick (Beth) of Raleigh NC, James D. Quick  (Christine) of Sugar Grove IL, James C. Quick of Compass Lake FL, Jack Quick of Cochran GA, Thomas Quick of Compass Lake FL; two sisters: Myrtice Strickland of Rehobeth AL; and Katrine Kirkland (Nathan) of Graceville FL; 31 Grandchildren and 41 Great-grandchildren.  

Mr. Carthon White McCollough

Mr. C.W. McCollough of Slocomb passed away Saturday, August 6, 2011 at SAMC.  He was 81. 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 9, 2011 in the Sorrells Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Phillip McCollough and Rev. Josh Wilson officiating.  Burial will follow in Taylor Assembly of God Church Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m.

Mr. McCollough was born on August 7, 1929 in Geneva County to the late Allen Lee and Eula McCollough. Five brothers, one sister, one great-grandchild, and the mother of his children: Sallie Mae McCollough preceded him in death.

Survivors include two daughters:  Vickie Thurman (Jimmy) of Slocomb, Audra Brown (Billy) of Samson; three sons: Robert McCollough (Brenda) of Slocomb, Royce McCollough (Marie) of Dothan, Jeffery C. McCollough (Dorothy “Marie”) of River Falls; eleven grandchildren; and eighteen great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of SAMC, Home Health, and Dr. John F Simmons for their love and support.

Mr. James C. Stephens

Mr. James C. Stephens of Newton, Alabama passed away Saturday, August 6, 2011 in Flowers Hospital following a brief illness. He was 62.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 9, 2011 in the Sorrels Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Larry Carpenter officiating.  Burial will follow in Newton City Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.

Mr. Stephens was born on March 8, 1949 to the late Bernice A. and Annie Clyde Stephens.  He was of the Assembly of God faith.  He retired from the Newton City Police Department. His wife, Sarah Ann Stephens, preceded Mr. Stephens in death.

Survivors include one daughter: Amy Ward (Earl) of Newton; one grandson: Treston Lee Ward of Newton; one brother: Lamar “Shorty” Stephens (Deborah) of Ashford; and one special friend:  Rose Elmore of Newton.

Mrs. Mary Rebecca Craig

 Mrs. Mary Rebecca Craig of Wesley Manor Nursing Home but formally of Slocomb, passed away Friday August 5, 2011.  She was 99.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 7, 2011 at Memory Hill cemetery with Rev. Randy Dunn officiating and Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.  Flowers will be accepted or contributions can be made to Wiregrass Hospice: P.O. Drawer 2127 Dothan, AL 36303. Mrs. Craig was born on July 1, 1912 in New Alexandria, PA to the late William Fillmore and Jennie Blanche South. 

Her husband, Raymond Craig, Sr., preceded her in death.

Survivors include one daughter: Blanche Campbell of Slocomb; one son: Raymond Craig, Jr. of Anniston; one sister: Mae Caldwell of Pearse; four grandchildren: Larry Craig of Hixson TN, Donna Pullen of Sugar Hill GA, Joseph Campbell, Jr. of Slocomb, Jenny Clark of Citronelle; and three great grandchildren: Katherine Clark of Citronelle, Anna Craig and David Craig both of Hixson, TN; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Paul L. Shipes

Mr. Paul L. Shipes of Hartford, Al passed away Friday, August 5, 2011 at the family residence.  He was 81.

 Funeral services will be 2:00pm Tuesday, August 9, 2011 from the Hartford Baptist Church with Dr. Ralph Brannon, Rev. Moody Faulk and Rev. Bruce Spivey officiating. Burial will follow in the Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church on Tuesday beginning at 1:00pm and continuing until service time. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Hartford Baptist Church or the First Baptist Church in Slocomb.

 Mr. Shipes was born July 12, 1930 in Hartford, AL to the late Sterling and Claudia Cotton Shipes. He served 2 years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his discharge in 1953, he settled in Slocomb, where he served as a member of the City Council for 8 years and as Mayor for 8 years. He was elected as a deacon of the First Baptist Church of Slocomb in 1973 and served 2 years as Post Commander of the American Legion, Slocomb District. He returned to Hartford in 1979 where he resided until his death. Mr. Shipes retired in 1994 after 37 years with maintenance contractors at Ft. Rucker. He was a member of the Hartford Baptist Church where he served as one of the teachers of the Baracca Sunday School Class until his recent illness. In addition to his parents, his brothers, Mack Murphy, Dolphus Shipes, sisters, Ruby, Opal, Eunice and Bonnie all preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah A. Shipes, Hartford formerly of Enterprise, one daughter, Donna Ruth Everett, Pinckard, AL,one son, Steven L. Shipes, Slocomb, AL, step-daughter Kay Baston Pearson, Belton, Texas, a brother, John D. Ward, Pensacola, FL, one sister, June Campbell, Garden Grove, CA. He was blessed with 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was greatly loved by all.

 Pallbearers will be members of the Baracca Sunday School Class of Hartford Baptist Church.

Mr. Carlos “Randall” Blackburn

Mr. Carlos “Randall” Blackburn of Hartford passed away peacefully at his home, Friday, July 22, 2011, surrounded by his loved ones.  He was 70. 

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 24, 2011 in the Sorrells Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Gary Armstrong and Rev. Chris Kroll officiating.  Burial will follow in the Hartford City Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing. Randall was born on January 18, 1941 in Holmes County FL to the late Floyd and Deniece Blackburn.  He attended Hartford Baptist Church. Randall lived most of his life around Graceville FL and worked with Henry Arnold Ford for 41 years.

Randall was preceded in death by brothers: Junior and James Blackburn; two sisters: Helen Tate, Opal Bradley and a niece: Pam Sims. 

Survivors include his wife of 20 years: Sarah Parker Blackburn of Hartford; three sons: Robin Blackburn (Sherry) of Hartford, Randy Blackburn (Bonnie) of Slocomb, Todd Blackburn (Janay) of Graceville FL; one daughter: Wendy Shehee (Joe) of Hartford; one step daughter: Denise Fitzgerald (Mike) of Hartford; grandchildren: Chris Blackburn, Brooke Blackburn, Shelby Blackburn, Brittney and Lacey Shehee, Rachel Blackburn, Brianne Fitzgerald, Jared Bottoms, Chris Brannon, Michael and Colby Sorrells; two sisters: Jo Hendrix (R.J.)  of Graceville FL, and Dot Vann (Raymond) of Slocomb; and several nieces and nephews. 

Pallbearers will be: Billy Berry, Jerry Jo Justice, Billy Jo Gavins, Johnny Howell, Johnny Isler, and Brent Herring.

Mr. James Dewayne Waters

Mr. James Dewayne Waters of Hartford passed away Wednesday, July 13, 2011.  He was 41.

Due to Friday's storm and the damage to First United Methodist Church in Hartfod, funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 16, in Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Slocomb with Rev. Wallace Russell officiating.  Burial will follow in Hartford City Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.

ewayne was born on September 21, 1969 in Dothan, AL to James Waters and Glenda Joy Battle Waters Jordan.  He attended Hartford First United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by a daughter:  Skylar Waters; his sister:  Dianne Holman; maternal grandfather:  Dudley Battle; paternal grandparents:  Robby and Odell Waters.

Survivors include his wife of 17 years:  Joy Waters of Hartford; two daughters:  Justina Waters and Jade Waters both of Hartford; parents:  Glenda Jordan of Dothan and James Waters of Slocomb; one sister:  Angela Brown of Dothan; maternal grandmother:  Louise Battle of Dothan; nephew:  Phillip Parrish; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Members of the Daybreak Hunting Club will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Mr. Royce J. Hanners 

Mr. Royce J. Hanners of Wicksburg Community passed away Tuesday, July 12, 2011.  He was 88.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 15 in Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Mark Turner officiating.  Burial will follow in Christian Home Church of Christ Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.  In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Wiregrass Hospice, P.O. Mr. Hanners was born on September 3, 1922 in Houston County, AL to the late Duke Royce and Odell Threatt Hanners.  He was a member of Christian Home Church of Christ.  He proudly served in the Navy during World War II and later retired as an aircraft mechanic from Hayes International.

Mrs. Louise McNeal Burkhead

Mrs. Louise McNeal Burkhead of Panama City, Florida and formerly of Hartford passed away Saturday, July 9, 2011.  She was 88.

 

Funeral services will be at 2:00pm Monday, July 11, 2011 in the Chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home in Slocomb. Burial will be in the Pondtown United Methodist Cemetery.

Mr. Charles Rex Neman, Sr.

Mr. Charles Rex Newman, Sr. of Hartford passed away Tuesday, July 5, 2011.  He was 81.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on  Friday, July 8, 2011 in Shiloh Baptist Church with Rev. Bryan Wagner and Rev. Robert McMicken officiating.  Burial will follow in Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.  The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time.

Mr. Newman was born on September 16, 1929 in Geneva County, AL to the late Rex and Alma Hall Newman.  He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son:  Michael Wayne Newman; three sisters:  Martha Smith, Betty Justice Spivey, and Edna Miller Walker.

Miss Glynda Ann Blackmon

Miss Glynda Ann Blackmon of Slocomb passed away Monday, July 4, 2011 in Hartford.  She was 65.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday in Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Slocomb with Rev. Bryan Sawyer officiating.  Burial will follow in Burns Church Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing. 

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. 

Glynda was born on June 17, 1946 in Houston County, AL to the late Rufus and Cora Lee Bailey Blackmon.  She was a member of Antioch Free Will Baptist Church.

Survivors include her brother and sister-in-law:  Michael and Libby Blackmon of Hartford; one sister and brother-in-law:  Faye and Larry Watson of Dothan; aunts:  Estelle Watson (J.D.), Voncille Mosley, Louise Deese, and Aunt Mary Ann; uncle:  Lunie Blackmon (Luverne); several nieces.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of SAMC, CareSouth Homecare Professionals, and Alacare Hospice for the care given to Glynda during her illness.

Mrs. Maggie K. Hobbs

Mrs. Maggie K. Hobbs of Slocomb went home to be with the Lord Saturday, July 2, 2011.  She was 76.

A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, in Sorrells Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Dan Raley officiating.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Wiregrass Hospice, 171 Westgate Parkway, Dothan AL 36303.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until service time.

Mrs. Hobbs was born on September 10, 1934 in Geneva County to the late Walter and Maggie Kimbro.  She was a member of Sardis Church in Hartford. Her husband, Wevone Hobbs, and three brothers preceded her in death. Survivors include two daughters: Kathi D. Johnson of Dothan, Deborah G. Morgan of Hartford; two sisters: Merle Reddish of Dothan, Mildred Smith of Titusville FL; one brother: Walter E. Kimbro of FL; two grand daughters: Nikki Johnson of Dothan, Amanda Morgan of Bonifay; one great granddaughter: Taylor Morgan; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Mattie Green Sullen Crosby

Mrs. Mattie Green Sullen Crosby of Slocomb passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2011.  She was 74.

Funeral services will be held at 5:00 p.m. on  Saturday, June 25, in Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel in Slocomb with Rev. Paul Grider officiating.  Burial will follow at a later date in Woodlawn Park Cemetery South in Miami, FL with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.

Mrs. Crosby was born on December 9, 1936 in Geneva County, AL to the late Roosevelt and Eunice Sullen.

rs. Crosby was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Arnette Crosby, her parents, two sisters and three brothers.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law:  Mark and Linda Crosby of Slocomb; two sisters:  Marie King of Dothan, Mary C. Sullen of Daleville; three brothers:  Ted Sullen of Sacramento, CA, Mitchell Sullen of Orlando, FL, Larry Sullen of Hartford; four granddaughters:  Shannon Perry, Javoni Crosby, Ebony Gordon, Desiree Gordon; three great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Charles Frederick "Fred" Cobb

Mr. Charles Frederick “Fred” Cobb of Dothan passed away Thursday, June 16, 2011 at his home.  He was 79.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 18, 2011 in Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Hosea Parker officiating.  Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.  Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to Wiregrass Hospice, P.O. Drawer 2127, Dothan, AL  36303.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 9:00 until service time. 

Fred was born on February 8, 1932 in Cedartown, GA to the late Claude and Gussie Mae Cobb.  He was a member of Malvern Baptist Church; he loved and appreciated his church family. 

He was a Korean War Veteran having served four years in the U.S. Navy, aboard the ship USS Hector out of San Diego, CA.  Fred was a tool and die maker; he was employed with Goodyear Mills in Cedartown, Scripto, Inc. in Atlanta and later retired from General Motors Corp. in Doraville, GA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers:  Luther, John and Pete Cobb; two sisters:  Mary Puckett and Lola Squires.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years:  Pat Cobb of Dothan; one daughter and son-in-law:  Brenda and Scott Laurens of Snellville, GA; four grandchildren:  Rob and Anoopa Laurens of Buford, GA, Drs. Matt and Naomi Laurens of Baltimore, MD, Chuck Laurens of Atlanta, GA, Angel and Trey Tillman of Birmingham, AL; one brother and sister-in-law:  Phil and Susan Cobb; three sisters and brothers-in-law:  Elise and Lewis Hicks, Ruby and Wayne Swafford, Betty and James Spikes; seven precious great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews, some of whom are very special.

Mr. Jimmie E. Strickland

Mr. Jimmie E. Strickland of Slocomb passed away Thursday, June 16, 2011 at his home.  He was 64.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 20, 2011 in Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church with Brother Wayne Parker officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.  The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time. 

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. 

He was born on June 6, 1947 in Geneva County, AL to the late Rex and Elma Sellers Strickland.  He was a member of Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife of 44 years, Barbara Cochran Strickland of Slocomb; one son:  John David Strickland of Slocomb; one daughter:  Julianna Hall (Nathan) of Slocomb; one sister:  Joan Wright (Stan) of Tavares, FL; two grandchildren:  Lucy and Lily Hall; nieces:  Nikki Wright, Becky Dodd (Dwight).

Mrs. Dorothy Cook

Mrs. Dorothy Smith Cook of Slocomb went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 5, 2011.  She was 81.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at Fadette Pentecostal Ministries Church with Rev. Johnny Strickland and Rev. Jimmy Cook officiating.  Burial will follow in Bethesda Baptist Church cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.  The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time. 

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Mrs. Cook was born on November 10, 1929 in Dale County to the late Alto and Lula Mae Cain.  She attended Fadette Pentecostal Ministries Church.

Her first husband, and father of her children, Raymond H. Smith, two brothers, six sisters, and one granddaughter preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband of 18 years: Leamon Cook of Slocomb; two sons: Ronnie Smith (Martha) of Fadette, Roger Smith (Teresa) of Malvern; stepchildren: Debra Hankin of Dothan, Linda Parker (Tom), Jimmy Cook (Jackie), James W. Cook (Anna) all of Malvern; one sister: Dolly Kirkland (Charlie) of Panama City, FL; sixteen grandchildren, twenty seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.  The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Hartford Health Care and Rehab for their kindness and care.

Mrs. Peacie Bolin Miller

Mrs. Peacie Bolin Miller of Slocomb passed away Sunday, June 5, 2011 at Hartford Health Care and Rehabilitation Center.  She was 97.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 in Union Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Wayne Parker officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.  The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to service time.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.

Mrs. Miller was born on September 6, 1913 in Geneva County to the late James Rufus and Elizabeth Bolin.  She was a member of Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Eugene J. Miller; two daughters-in-law: Jeanette Miller and Jean Miller; one grandson: Huey (Tank) Miller; four sisters and two brothers.

Survivors include her two sons:  Vivian Miller of Slocomb, Clement Miller of Columbus, GA; three grand children and seven great grandchildren.

Mr. Harry H. Parrish

Mr. Harry H. Parrish of Jacksonville FL passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at Signature Healthcare.  He was 77.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 3, 2011 in the Sorrells Funeral Home chapel with Rev. Adam Habbard officiating.  Burial will follow in Malvern Baptist Church Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing. 

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 1:00 until service time.

Mr. Parrish was born on July 10, 1933 in Geneva County to the late Ammie L and Ethel Stewart Parrish. He worked as a truck driver until his retirement.

His wife, Annie Lucille Parrish, and a sister, Evelyn Parrish Green, preceded him in death.

Survivors include three brothers: Ammie Parrish Jr. (Margie) of Headland, Ernest “Buddy” Parrish (Ann) of Dothan, Robert E. Parrish (Mary) of Del Rio, TX; three sisters: Grace Battles of Geneva, Charlotte Teets (Henry) Donalsonville GA, Susan Blount (Kenneth) of Slocomb; and many nieces and nephews.
